I get "relaying denied" when trying to send email from
my computer.
If you are seeing this error:Error: 554. Relay access denied. Mail could not be sent. Recipient address rejected.then you most likely have the wrong settings in your email program in the Outgoing Mailserver configuration section.
If you have your email program's SMTP Relay or Outgoing Mailserver setting set to mail.modwest.com, then you should remove that setting now and contact your Internet Service Provider (dialup modem, DSL, cable, broadband) who you get your own internet access from and ask them what their correct Outgoing Mailserver setting is, and put that in this place instead as described here.
If you are one of the very few people who do not have an ISP that provides you with its own Outgoing Mailserver, and therefore as a last resort you have put mail.modwest.com in the Outgoing Mailserver setting, first test your username and password by logging into the Control Panel. If you can login, then see this other FAQ on the unsupported and not recommended setup for smtp relaying that we allow using that username and password. If you could not login to the Control Panel with that username and password, then you will not be able to use that username and password for SMTP relaying either. You can see a list of valid Mailbox usernames on your mailbox control page. If you have no valid username and password, fetch your Password to get one.
If you (correctly) do not have your email program set to use us as an outgoing mail relay, you should doublecheck all your outgoing mail settings in your mail program. If you believe all the settings are correct, you should then contact your ISP, your Network Administrator, or the maintainers of the outgoing mailserver that is set in your email program and notify them of your problem.
Only as a last resort if nothing else works should you try setting your mail program to use us as your outgoing mailserver. More reasons for avoiding this configuration are listed here.
