What can I do to improve Drupal's loading speed?

There are a couple of quick changes you can make that generally have a large effect on Drupal's performance:
  1. Disable/Uninstall unneeded modules
  2. Enable Zend Optimizer
These two quick changes ought to give your Drupal installation a boost.

A few more things that make a BIG difference...
Under Site Configuration->Performance:
Enable the "normal" Drupal cache.
Enable Block Cache.
Enable Optimize CSS.
Enable Optimize JS.

If you have a busy site with logged in visitors posting new content, set
the minimum cache lifetime to a time you're willing to wait for new
content to display.

If you're on a VPS account, enable the APC module for PHP, and enable a
MySQL query cache of 64MB (or greater)

If you do not allow visitors to log in, consider using the Boost module,
which creates static copies of your pages.
